What is Squalane?

To better understand the benefits of squalane, it's important to distinguish it from squalene. Up to 12% of human skin sebum is actually comprised of squalene, which is an unsaturated hydrocarbon that is prone to oxidation and can cause skin irritation. On the other hand, squalane is a hydrogenated version of squalene and is a more stable and non-irritating form of the same compound.

Newest Source from Oriental Plant

Squalene can be, and is commonly harvested from different sources, including shark liver and plant sources such as olives and sugarcane.

However, using shark-derived squalene poses a significant threat to the marine ecosystem, as it contributes to overfishing and can harm apex predators that accumulate high levels of toxins. The accumulation of high levels toxins will pose a threaten to human health, especially if the squalane is used in products that are applied to the skin. Moreover, there are ethical concerns around the use of animal-derived ingredients, especially for consumers opposed to animal testing.

Fortunately, sustainable alternatives like plant-based squalane offer a cruelty-free and eco-friendly option for cosmetic formulations. A new source of squalane has been discovered in Camellia oil, a beauty elixir that is revered in China for its ability to impart youthful, immaculate beauty to women. Compared to other sources of squalane, Camellia-derived squalane boasts a superior skin feel that is fresher, spreads more easily, and leaves skin feeling softer and more supple after application. Additionally, it has a richer texture that provides a nourishing, non-greasy finish to the skin.

From Camellia Seed to Camellia Seed Oil to Camellia Squalane

To obtain camellia-derived squalane, mature camellia fruits are handpicked and dried, and the outer shell is removed to obtain the seeds. The seeds are then cleaned, dried, and pressed at a low temperature to retain the nutrients and active substances in the oil. Ferromagnetic impurities are removed using magnetic separation technology during processing.

The process of obtaining squalane from camellia seed oil involves dynamic and controlled crystallization using vacuum and molecular distillation. A highly efficient chromatographic separation system is established for the purification of crude squalene. Finally, hydrogen gas is added to the squalene under high pressure and temperature, resulting in the conversion of squalene into stable and non-irritating squalane. Notably, this process ensures that there are no residual organic solvents, making it safe and environmentally friendly.
